BCRC Completes Internship Report
BCRC was hired by the Workforce and Education Committee of the Bennington County Industrial Corporation (BCIC) to undertake an evaluation of internship programs in the Bennington area and to make recommendations to move toward a more comprehensive local program to benefit students, businesses and adults who may be in career transition. The initial evaluation report has been completed including recommendations for next steps. The report looks at the various internship programs at the local and state level, economic and demographic data, an employer survey and best practices from internships around the country.
Related to this work, in October, BCRC’s Sustainable Community Development Program Director, Bill Colvin, facilitated an internship panel for the BCIC Workforce and Education Committee and the public. The panelists included Michelle Kupersmith (Vermont Department of Labor/Vermont Workforce Investment Board). Roxanne Voght (Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility/Vermont Internship Program), Jan Coplan (Windham Higher Education Cooperative/Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation) and Kevin Daily (Mack Molding). The panelists discussed lessons learned as they put together and implemented their respective internship programs and provided suggestions on how the Bennington area may benefit from those lessons.
Work in this area will continue over the next several months as the BCIC Workforce and Education Committee evaluates the possibility of creating a local internship coordinator position to work with area employers to increase the utilization of and effectiveness of interns in their enterprises. A copy of the report will be available on the Sustainable Community Development section of BCRC’s website.
